The Apostles Creed

One of the centerpiece prayers of the Rosary and for Christians daily prayer is the Apostles Creed.  The prayer is powerful, and beautiful all at the same time.  It’s an extremely important prayer as it lays out our fundamental beliefs as Christians.

The Apostles Creed is a statement/confirmation of one’s Christian beliefs.  It’s important as it confirms belief in the holy “trinity”, that is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

Our friends at Catholic.org have put together an amazing video:

We have also come across the Apostles Creed in Latin:

Credo in Deum Patrem omnipotentem, Creatorem caeli et terrae,
et in Iesum Christum, Filium Eius unicum, Dominum nostrum,
qui conceptus est de Spiritu Sancto, natus ex Maria Virgine,
passus sub Pontio Pilato, crucifixus, mortuus, et sepultus,
descendit ad inferos, tertia die resurrexit a mortuis,
ascendit ad caelos, sedet ad dexteram Dei Patris omnipotentis,
inde venturus est iudicare vivos et mortuos.
Credo in Spiritum Sanctum,
sanctam Ecclesiam catholicam, sanctorum communionem,
remissionem peccatorum,
carnis resurrectionem,
vitam aeternam.
Amen.

On the surface, the prayer seems quite basic, but if we dig a little deeper we find it contains a lot of very important basic tenants and beliefs.  In fact, there are 12 basic tenants the prayer professes:

  1. I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
  2. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
  3. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
  4. Under Pontius Pilate, He was crucified, died, and was buried.
  5. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again.
  6. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
  7. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
  8. I believe in the Holy Spirit,
  9. the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints,
  10. the forgiveness of sins,
  11. the resurrection of the body,
  12. and the life everlasting.
